Our story
A living Pokédex for the sky, built for one boy who never stops looking up.
It started with Zach
John McKenzie built MySkyDex for his autistic 11-year-old son, Zach. Zach is obsessed with aeroplanes. He can spend hours every day on FlightRadar24, watching dots crawl across the map, learning callsigns, spotting favourites, and asking which ones have been this way before.
The apps he loved were brilliant at showing what is in the sky right now, but not so good at turning that into his collection. Which ones had he already seen? Which ones keep flying over home? Which ones got away?
Make the sky collectible
MySkyDex is the answer John wanted for their family: a place where every pass can become something you keep. Spot an aircraft while it is close enough, tap I SEE IT! for a full-colour Hangar collectible, or I HEARD IT if you only caught the sound — a blue record you can add to your Hangar when you get the visual. Miss it entirely, and it becomes a Ghost, greyscale until you catch it next time.
It is meant to feel playful without being childish: rarity, XP, missions and badges turn looking up into a game Zach can return to day after day.
Home and away
Even when the family is out, Zach can still see what is flying over the house. MySkyDex watches two places at once: your fixed Home sky, and your current location when you are out and about.
Come back later and the return summary tells you what happened while you were away, new passes, new ghosts, rare visitors. The sky keeps playing whether the tablet is open or not.
Built with care
MySkyDex is a small, personal project for a very specific kind of wonder, the kind Zach brings to every vapour trail and every distant roar. If it helps one more family turn “what’s that plane?” into a shared ritual, it has done its job.
